Get Ready! Maha Songkran 2568 Is Coming Soon
The grand water splashing festival is about to begin! From April 13-15, get ready to experience full-on fun that will attract tourists from around the globe to celebrate this festival of water.
This year, Songkran returns with double the excitement. Water splashing will be livelier than ever. Streets and alleys throughout the city will be filled with smiles and laughter, as if we are going back to the crazy times before COVID!
Popular water play spots in Bangkok like Khao San Road, Sukhumvit, Silom, and Central Plaza remain the highlights of this year. Moreover, major cities in provinces are also getting ready to celebrate just as intensely, especially Chiang Mai, which is renowned as one of the top destinations for the Songkran festival.
The Songkran Festival, held every year from April 13-15, is approaching! Songkran is considered Thai New Year and has long been a tradition.
The term "Songkran" originates from Sanskrit and means "movement" or "transition", which refers to the period when the sun moves out of Pisces and into Aries in April. If a transition occurs in other months, it is considered a normal change.
According to astrology, the sun regularly moves from one zodiac sign to the next every month, a process known as "ascending into a new constellation." However, the transition into Aries during April is a significant time celebrated as the Songkran festival.

The Songkran Festival is held annually from April 13-15
- April 13 - Maha Songkran Day is considered the end of the old year according to the Thai calendar. People will clean their homes to sweep away bad things and get ready to welcome the New Year brightly. Many households traditionally set off firecrackers or make loud noises to drive away evil spirits, according to ancient beliefs.
- April 14 - Nao Day or Nao is a day of preparation for the New Year. Various temples start organizing Songkran merit-making ceremonies, especially in the afternoon when sand is brought to temples to build sand pagodas. Ancients believe that on this day, one should not speak rudely or argue, as it may bring bad luck throughout the year.
- April 15 - The Day of the New Year's Festival or Phaya Wan Day is the official start of Thai New Year. People usually visit temples to make merit, dedicate good deeds to ancestors, and pour water over the heads of elders to ask for blessings. Additionally, it's a significant opportunity for young people to meet amidst the joyous atmosphere of Songkran water play.
