10 Types of Common Forklift

Forklifts are among the most powerful vehicles available. Whether you need to move heavy items in a warehouse or various locations, a forklift can lift items that humans cannot safely do, making it essential on various job sites.

Warehouse Forklift

1. Warehouse Forklift

The warehouse forklift is the most recognized type of forklift, characterized by its dual forks protruding from the front. You usually use this forklift in places with a large quantity of goods in inventory. These vehicles are suitable for loading and unloading pallets and various items, including offloading items from trucks. Popular warehouse forklift models include TOYOTA 8FB25, TOYOTA 8FG25, and FORX 3 TONS. Most industrial forklifts can lift up to 2.5 tons, but some heavy-duty models can lift 10 tons or more. There are several subtypes of warehouse forklifts, including side loaders and counterbalance forklifts.

Side Loader

2. Side Loader

Side loaders are a subtype of warehouse forklifts and are typically found in steel service centers and manufacturing plants with heavy and bulky items. Operators stand in a side compartment and load items that run laterally. Due to its side operations, a side loader can easily drive and lift items onto shelving without turning, making it suitable for narrow aisle use and lifting long items, such as wood and pipes. Leading manufacturers of side loaders include Toyota and Raymond Corporation.

Counterbalance Forklift

3. Counterbalance Forklift

Counterbalance forklifts are popular vehicles with forks at the front and a weight at the back of the vehicle to balance the load. This allows them to lift heavy items equal to the weight at the back of the forklift. Counterbalance forklifts have many types, with 3-wheel models suitable for situations where operators need to turn and maneuver in tight spaces, as they have a very narrow turning radius. Popular manufacturers of counterbalance forklifts include FORX, Mitsubishi, and Toyota.

Telehandler

4. Telehandler

Telehandlers or reach forklifts are vehicles equipped with an extendable boom and arm, creating a combination of a crane and a forklift. The dual forks attached to this arm are used to move pallets off the ground. Standard telehandlers can lift loads of up to 2.5 tons to a height of 6 meters in the air. This type of material handling vehicle is not suitable for accessing tight or narrow spaces, but due to their increasing popularity, manufacturers such as JCB, Genie, Bobcat, Haulotte, and Caterpillar produce high-quality telehandlers in various models. Models like the JLG 1644 specialize in lifting large loads, while others can lift loads at heights of up to 15 meters.

Industrial Forklift

5. Industrial Forklift

Industrial forklifts are large vehicles that integrate warehouse forklift functionalities with telehandler features. Although telehandlers cannot reach difficult corners, they can lift heavier loads much higher from the ground compared to warehouse forklifts. Industrial forklifts start with a lifting capacity of 10 tons. Due to their large size, industrial forklifts have some limitations when compared to telehandler and warehouse forklifts.

Rough Terrain Forklift

6. Rough Terrain Forklift

Rough Terrain Forklifts are designed specifically for outdoor job sites, particularly on uneven surfaces. These vehicles have heavy-duty pneumatic tires that provide traction on rocky terrain. The special tires are oversized and come with treads for better stability and balance when safely moving materials. If you mostly work indoors, you might not need this type of forklift.

Pallet Jack

7. Pallet Jack

Pallet jacks, also known as power pallet trucks, cannot lift large items due to their smaller size, making them suitable for lifting items in tight spaces. Although their lifting capability is low, the costs for purchasing and renting are also very low.

Walkie Stacker

8. Walkie Stacker

Walkie stackers have a unique appearance and are specialized in their utility. These stackers do not have cabins unlike other forklifts. Operators walk behind the stacker and control the vehicle using a handle instead. Similar to hand lifts, they may lack the agility and speed compared to driving a forklift.

Order Picker

9. Order Picker

Order pickers are a subclass of forklifts, used for picking and delivering materials from storage that can reach heights of up to 8 meters. These machines are designed to lift operators up to warehouse shelves to pick items one at a time instead of lifting an entire pallet. They are mostly used in warehouses, and their versatile design allows them to handle various goods, from automotive parts to furniture.

Reach Truck

10. Reach Truck

Reach fork trucks are warehouse trucks primarily used for indoor jobs. Their main ability is to extend the forks outside the storage openings and reach warehouse shelving in a way that standard forklifts cannot. They also have openings that provide operators with better visibility. While they are suitable for indoor use, reach forklifts are not suitable for outdoor work due to their low clearance. UniCarriers, Clark Materials, and Yale manufacture some high-quality reach forklifts.
