It all started with the vision, hard work and horse and cart of one man - Albert Toll.

The Toll business was established in 1888 in Newcastle, Australia, by Albert Toll, who began his operations by hauling coal using horse and cart. From these humble beginnings, he founded a transport company. By the time of his death in 1958 at the age of 95, Albert had expanded his operations to a fleet of trucks across five locations.

After Albert Toll

In 1959, the business founded by Albert was sold to National Minerals, leaving the Toll family. In the following decade, it became part of the mining conglomerate Peko Wallsend, which utilized the Toll business for all of its transport activities. Under Peko Wallsend, Toll was developed into a national carrier. 

The company later changed its name to Toll-Chadwick, as its new owners aimed to integrate the businesses and expand into containerized shipping. By the mid-1980s, Toll-Chadwick had become one of Australia's largest transport operations outside the capital cities.
